  • Limerick V Louth Match Report - 12 Feb 2012

    Limerick V Louth

    Dromcollogher

    Sunday Feb 12

Limerick did just about enough to see off the stiff challenge of Louth in Dromcollogher last Sunday. Playing in heavy underfoot conditions, the match was tight all the way through. In the 7th minute, Limerick opened the scoring with a point from local girl Joanne O Gorman. It took Louth 15 minutes to get their opening score with a long range free from midfielder Maura Lynch. Louth came close to scoring the opening goal shortly after and will look back on clear point chances in the 16th and 17th minute which they should have converted. However, Louth did convert two point chances in the 21st and 23rd minutes. Claire O Riordan replaced Sarah Downey at corner forward and this was to prove telling in the final outcome. Dymphna O Brien added two frees before half time to leave the Limerick one point behind at half time, 4 points to 3.

At half time Clodagh Reidy replaced Niamh McCarthy. Louth opened the scoring with a point from centre forward Niamh Reid.  Limerick were struggling in attack and found themselves defending against a strong Louth attack. Louth hit the upright before adding another point to leave Louth 3 points up going into the last quarter. Clodagh Reidy didn’t hesitate to go for goal from 14 yards which left the sides level with 10 minutes on the clock. Both sides exchanged points followed by Louth adding two points from play. With 4 minutes left Limerick were two points down. However,  a run from 40 yards by Claire O Riordan, saw her scoring a stunning goal which was to prove to be the defining score of the match. With a one point lead, Limerick had to defend their narrow lead all the way to the final whistle.

Limerick’s team, with many new young players,  and management will know that huge improvement is required if promotion from Div 4 is to be achieved. Next up is Longford at a Limerick venue next week-end.
